How to Choose a Gemstone by Your Vedic Sign

Most people choose a gemstone by colour. In Vedic tradition, the stone chooses you first, through the planet that rules your sign. Long before a single cut is made, the system already knows which stone belongs to you.

I am Nimisha. Four generations of my family worked as goldsmiths in India before I brought the craft to London. The question I am asked most often is simple: which stone is mine? The answer sits inside a logic that is centuries old and surprisingly clear once you see it.

How do you choose a gemstone by your Vedic sign?

To choose a gemstone by your Vedic sign, find your Rashi · राशि (your Vedic zodiac sign), identify its ruling planet, and wear that planet's traditional stone. In Jyotish · ज्योतिष, Vedic astrology, each of the twelve Rashis is governed by one planet, and each planet has one gemstone paired to it. The stone is chosen by the planet, not the season.

This is the difference between Western birthstones and Vedic stones. Birthstones follow a fixed monthly calendar. Vedic stones follow the planet that rules your sign. The two systems rarely give the same answer.

Jewellery according to Vedic astrology: the rule behind it

The pairing of stone to planet comes from classical Sanskrit gemmological texts passed down through generations of goldsmiths. If you would like to read more, the Garuda Purana is one of the oldest written sources on gem classification in India, and a fascinating starting point for anyone interested in diving deeper (Garuda Purana). The nine planets, the Navagraha · नवग्रह, include the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu.

For sign selection, seven planets matter, because they are the ones that rule the twelve signs. Please note that the associations below are cultural and symbolic, drawn from classical Jyotish, rather than medical claims or guarantees.

How to find your Rashi first

Your Vedic sign is usually your Moon sign, not your Sun sign, which is why it often differs from the Western star sign you grew up with. The Vedic and Western systems sit roughly 23 days apart because they measure the sky against different reference points.

The simplest way to find yours is our Vedic Rashi calculator. Enter your birth details and it returns your Rashi, its ruling planet and its stone, so you know exactly which gemstone to look for.

Choosing your piece

Once you know your stone, the choice becomes specific rather than overwhelming. The Rashi pendant collection sets each sign's stone in 18K gold vermeil over 925 sterling silver, priced from £79 to £389.

If your sign is ruled by the Moon, the pearl pieces hold Karka's calm. If Venus rules your sign, a lab-grown diamond piece gives that refinement, with the same chemistry and symbolism as a mined stone. Each stone gives one clear reason to choose it, which is what makes a Rashi piece easy to buy for yourself and easy to gift to someone whose sign you know.
